Feedback that lands

For shepherdsUpdated 29 Sep 2026

Kind, specific and actionable: how to give feedback a talent can use straight away.

Talents book you for an honest view from someone a step ahead. Good feedback is kind, specific and something they can act on this week.

Five habits

Name the behaviour, not the person

"Your answer to that question ran for four minutes" is something they can change. "You ramble" isn't.

Say what worked before what didn't

Starting with a real strength shows you were paying attention, and makes the harder part easier to hear.

Give one thing to try, not five

A long list is hard to act on. Pick the change that will make the biggest difference and leave the rest for another time.

Ask them to reflect before you suggest

Try: "How do you think that went?" People often spot the issue themselves, and they remember what they worked out far better than what they were told.

Follow up a week later to reinforce it

A short message asking how it went shows you meant it. You can pick up the conversation in Messages at any time after a chat.

Your rating is feedback too

After the chat, rate the talent and pick what they did well and what they could do better. Ratings are shared anonymously, only once 3 different people have rated them, so be honest and kind. Rating the talents you meet
